Guilin and Yangshuo Travel Guide - Karst Peaks and the Li River (3-4 Days)

The landscape around Guilin and Yangshuo is the China of imagination — jagged karst peaks erupting from emerald rice paddies, the Li River winding between bamboo groves and fishing villages, water buffalo grazing in the shadow of limestone towers. This scenery has inspired Chinese poets and painters for over 1,500 years and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007 as part of the South China Karst.

For international travelers, the Guilin-Yangshuo corridor offers an extraordinary concentration of natural beauty, outdoor adventure, and cultural immersion, all within a compact 3-4 day itinerary.

When to Visit

Autumn (September — November) is peak season for good reason: dry weather, clear skies, comfortable temperatures of 18-28 degrees C (64-82 degrees F), and September has the lowest rainfall of the year. Spring (April — May) brings the famous “misty Li River” — rolling fog softens the karst peaks into a traditional ink-wash painting. Temperatures range from 15-25 degrees C (59-77 degrees F).

Summer (June — August) is hot and rainy, but the river is at its highest, making bamboo rafting more exciting. Winter (December — February) sees few tourists and lower prices, though some outdoor activities may be limited.

3-4 Day Itinerary

Day 1: Guilin City

TimeActivityDuration
MorningElephant Trunk Hill1-2 hours
MiddayEast-West Alley (Dongxi Xiang) for lunch1-2 hours
AfternoonExplore downtown, Reed Flute Cave (optional)2-3 hours
EveningSun and Moon Twin Pagodas (night view) + Xiaoyao Tower2 hours

Elephant Trunk Hill (Xiangbi Shan, free admission) is Guilin’s most iconic landmark — a limestone formation that resembles an elephant drinking from the Li River. The arch between the “trunk” and the “body” creates a perfect circular reflection in the water. Enter from Gate 2 for the classic full-view photograph.

The Reed Flute Cave (Ludi Yan) is a spectacular karst cave illuminated with multicolored lighting, located about 4 miles (7 km) northwest of downtown. Book online for 82 yuan (~$12) versus 90 yuan at the gate. Allow 1-1.5 hours. If you only have time for one cave, however, save it for the more impressive Silver Cave near Yangshuo on Day 2 or 4.

At night, the Sun and Moon Twin Pagodas on Shan Lake create a stunning reflection — one gold, one silver, rising from the water. The Two Rivers and Four Lakes night cruise (about 210 yuan / $31 for 1.5-2 hours) is a relaxing way to see the illuminated city, including the pagodas, musical fountains, and lakeside architecture.

Where to eat in Guilin: Guilin rice noodles (guilin mifeng) are the city’s signature dish — silky rice noodles topped with crispy pork, braised beef, meatballs, and a secret soy-based sauce. Try Chongshan Rice Noodles (headquarters location), a clean and popular local chain.

Other local specialties include ban yu hot pot (snakehead fish hot pot), zhu tong ji (bamboo-tube chicken), and luo si fen (snail rice noodles, a Guangxi sensation).

Day 2: The Li River — Guilin to Yangshuo

This is the centerpiece of the entire trip. You have two ways to experience the Li River:

Option A: Li River Cruise (Full Journey)

The classic 4-hour boat journey from Guilin to Yangshuo covers approximately 37 miles (60 km) of the most celebrated river scenery in China.

Highlights along the route: Nine Horses Fresco Hill (a cliff face where legend says you can see nine horses painted by nature), Yellow Cloth Shoal (the exact view printed on China’s 20-yuan banknote), and Xingping fishing village.

Booking: Reserve 3-5 days ahead during peak seasons (Spring Festival, National Day) via the official Li River website, Ctrip, or Klook.

Option B: Bamboo Raft (Essence Section)

For a more intimate, on-the-water experience, the Yangdi-to-Xingping bamboo raft covers the most photogenic 9 miles (14 km) in 80-100 minutes.

  • Price: 120-225 yuan ($18-33) per person
  • Raft type: Motorized 4-person bamboo raft
  • Hours: 8:20 AM — 4:30 PM (Xingping dock)
  • Note: Bamboo rafts cannot operate between 9:30 AM and 1:30 PM on some days due to large cruise ship traffic

After arriving in Yangshuo (by boat or bus), spend the evening exploring West Street (Xi Jie), a bustling pedestrian street lined with restaurants, bars, and souvenir shops. This is where you will find the famous pijiu yu (beer fish) — fresh Li River carp pan-fried then braised in local beer.

Recommended beer fish restaurants:

Day 3: Yangshuo Deep Exploration

TimeActivityDuration
MorningYulong River bamboo raft (Jinlongqiao to Jiuxian)2 hours
MiddayLunch at Longjing Village or Meijiawu farmhouse1 hour
AfternoonCycling through Ten-Mile Gallery2-3 hours
EveningImpression Liu Sanjie performance1.5 hours

Yulong River Bamboo Rafting is a quieter, gentler alternative to the Li River rafting. The Jinlongqiao-to-Jiuxian section features calm waters, small dams that create thrilling mini-drops, and karst peaks reflected in mirror-still water. Book through Klook or at the dock.

Ten-Mile Gallery cycling is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful bike rides in the world. Rent an electric scooter (about 30 yuan / $4.40 per day) in Yangshuo and ride through a corridor of karst peaks, rice paddies, water buffalo, and village life. Note: Yangshuo does not have bike-sharing — rent from one of the many shops in town.

Impression Liu Sanjie is a monumental outdoor spectacle created by filmmaker Zhang Yimou (director of the 2008 Beijing Olympics opening ceremony). Performed on the actual Li River with 12 karst peaks as the backdrop, it features over 600 performers on, in, and around the water, illuminated by dramatic lighting. The stage stretches 2 kilometers (1.2 miles).

Local Tip: Book Impression Liu Sanjie tickets several days in advance during peak season — they regularly sell out. Seats in the middle rows offer the best balance of view and sound.

Day 4 (Optional): Karst Adventure

Option A: Silver Cave (Yinzi Yan)

The most spectacular karst cave near Yangshuo, featuring massive stalactite formations that shimmer like silver. The local saying goes: “Visit Silver Cave, and you will never lack money.” Tickets: 65-85 yuan ($10-13). Allow 1.5-2 hours.

Option B: Rock Climbing

Yangshuo is one of the world’s premier rock climbing destinations. The limestone karst peaks offer hundreds of routes from beginner (5 meters / 16 feet) to advanced (15+ meters / 49+ feet), with professional guides available at a roughly 1:4 instructor-to-climber ratio. You can also try via ferrata (iron path) — climbing along steel cables and crossing suspension bridges with dual safety locks. Book a full-day cycling and climbing tour through Klook.

Option C: Xianggong Mountain Sunrise

For photographers, Xianggong Mountain offers the definitive view of the Li River’s First Bend, with karst peaks arrayed in layers. Shared transport departs Yangshuo at 4:00 AM (40-50 yuan / $6-7 per person). A private round-trip costs about 230 yuan ($34).

Other Yangshuo activities:

  • Cormorant fishing experience — watch traditional fishermen use trained birds
  • Guilin Romance Park show (family-friendly alternative to Impression Liu Sanjie)
  • Xingping Old Town — the 20-yuan banknote viewpoint and a well-preserved fishing village (free)

Karst Landscape Highlights

The Guilin-Yangshuo region is a textbook example of tropical karst topography. Over 200 million years, slightly acidic rainwater dissolved the limestone bedrock, creating the dramatic peaks, caves, underground rivers, and sinkholes visible today.

Local Tip: If you only have 3 days, skip Day 4 and fit Silver Cave into the afternoon after arriving in Yangshuo by boat on Day 2. The cave is on the route between Guilin and Yangshuo, making it a convenient add-on. If you are traveling with elderly parents or young children, replace the Ten-Mile Gallery bicycle ride with a sightseeing cart tour for a more relaxed pace.

Avoid: Do not visit during the October 1-7 National Day holiday or Chinese New Year. Domestic tourists descend on Yangshuo in staggering numbers, prices double or triple, and the Li River becomes a traffic jam of cruise ships. Also, always confirm the price before hiring a private car for scenic area trips — unscrupulous drivers sometimes quote one price and demand another at the destination.
