Kunming and Dali Travel Guide - Yunnan's Spring City and Erhai Lake (2026)
Kunming and Dali are the two cities most foreign travelers skip on a rush to Lijiang or Shangri-La. That is a mistake. Kunming is China’s spring city, with a UNESCO Stone Forest and a lakeside promenade full of Siberian gulls. Dali has one of the most beautiful lakes in Asia, a walled old town you can wander for free, and a Bai minority culture that predates the Mongol Empire. Together they make a perfect four to five day stop, and the 240-hour visa-free transit policy covers both.
Quick answer: Spend 1-2 days in Kunming (Stone Forest ¥130, Dianchi Lake, Green Lake Park) then take the 2-hour high-speed train to Dali (¥145 second class) for 2-3 days (Erhai Lake cycling, Dali Old Town free entry, Three Pagodas ¥75, Xizhou). The 240-Hour Visa-Free Yunnan Advantage
Kunming Changshui Airport (KMG) is a 240-hour visa-free transit port for citizens of 57 countries (Indonesia was added in June 2025). But the stay area is not all of Yunnan. It covers 9 of Yunnan’s 16 prefectures: Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, Yuxi, Pu’er, Chuxiong, Xishuangbanna, Honghe (home of the Yuanyang rice terraces), and Wenshan (home of Puzhehei).
Baoshan (Tengchong hot springs) and Dehong (Ruili borderlands) are not in the visa-free zone. If you plan to visit those areas, you need a regular visa. Entry ports for the Yunnan visa-free zone are KMG, Lijiang Sanyi (LJG), and the Mohan railway port.
Dali Fengyi Airport (DLU) is not a 240-hour port. To depart China visa-free, return to Kunming or Lijiang.
Kunming: The Spring City (1-2 Days)
Kunming’s climate is famously mild. Year-round temperatures hover between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius (59 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit), earning it the nickname “City of Eternal Spring.” Most travelers treat Kunming as a transit hub, but one or two days here rewards you with a world-class geological site and one of China’s most pleasant urban lakes.
Stone Forest (Shilin)
The Stone Forest is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a 350-square-kilometer karst landscape of towering limestone pillars that look like a petrified forest. It is one of the most surreal landscapes in China.
Tickets cost ¥130 per person (reduced from ¥175 in October 2018 as part of a national price-cut campaign). This ticket bundles five sub-areas (Major Stone Forest, Minor Stone Forest, Bushaoshan, Liziyuanqing, Wannianlingzhi) plus the Karst Geology Museum, which used to be a separate ¥120 fee. So the real savings are larger than the ¥175-to-¥130 number suggests. Half-price tickets (¥65) are available for students and seniors aged 60-69. Children under 6 and adults over 70 enter free.
A note on pricing: a hearing was held in 2026 to propose raising the integrated ticket to ¥205. As of August 2026 this has not been implemented, but verify before you go.
The Stone Forest is about 78 km from Kunming city center. Take a bus from Kunming East Bus Station (about 1.5 hours) or hire a driver for the day.

Dianchi Lake and Green Lake Park
Dianchi Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Yunnan and sits on the western edge of Kunming. From November to March, tens of thousands of Siberian gulls winter here, creating one of China’s most photographed urban wildlife scenes. The lakeside promenade is free.
Green Lake Park (Cuihu) is in the city center, free to enter, and the best place to see the gulls up close. In the morning, locals practice tai chi and feed the birds. It is one of the most pleasant urban parks in China.
The Yunnan Nationalities Village (¥90) on the south shore of Dianchi showcases the architecture and culture of 25 ethnic minorities. It is touristy but well done.
Dali: Erhai Lake and the Old Town (2-3 Days)
Dali is the spiritual heart of the Bai people and has been a trading post on the Tea Horse Road for over a thousand years. The old town sits between Erhai Lake to the east and the Cangshan mountain range to the west, a backdrop that makes every street view look like a painting.
Dali Old Town
Dali Old Town is free to enter for individual travelers. There is no gate, no ticket, and no maintenance fee for solo visitors. Group tours pay ¥30 per person (a fee collected from travel agencies since 2015, not from individual walkers). Many English guides still mention a ¥30 or ¥40 “old town fee” that was either confused with the group levy or with the Erhai resource protection fee that was abolished years ago.
Erhai Lake
Erhai Lake is the reason most people come to Dali. The lake is about 250 square kilometers, and the full ring road runs roughly 130 km. Cycling the eastern shore (about 40 km from Dali to Haishe) is one of the best day rides in Asia.
Three ecological restrictions are now in place, and they affect your visit:
- The 46-km ecological corridor along the western and northern shore bans all motor vehicles. You can walk or cycle it, but not drive or take a scooter.
- Haishe Park (a peninsula on the north shore) closed for ecological restoration in 2019 and reopened with limited access. It currently requires advance reservation and is open only from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
- A year-round fishing ban is in effect. The “Erhai fish” served in local restaurants is almost entirely pond-farmed, not wild-caught from the lake.
Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple
The Three Pagodas (¥75) are Dali’s most iconic sight. The main pagoda, Qianxun Pagoda, stands 69.13 meters tall and was built around 824 AD during the Nanzhao Kingdom. The two smaller pagodas date from the Five Dynasties period. These three are the only genuine ancient structures on the site. The surrounding Chongsheng Temple complex was destroyed centuries ago. What you see today is a modern reconstruction built in the 2000s. It is impressive, but do not mistake it for a thousand-year-old building.

Xizhou and Shuanglang
Xizhou (about 20 km north of Dali Old Town) is a Bai village famous for its traditional courtyard architecture (the Yan Family Compound is the standout). It is less commercialized than the old town and gives a more authentic look at Bai life.
Shuanglang is a small fishing village on the eastern shore of Erhai that has become a backpacker and boutique-hotel hub. The sunset views across the lake are among the best in Dali.

Getting Between Them
The Kunming to Dali high-speed train takes about 2 hours and costs ¥145 for second class (¥222 first class). Trains run frequently throughout the day from Kunming Station and Kunming South Station. Arrive at Dali Station, which is about 20 minutes by taxi from the old town.
If you are arriving by air, Kunming Changshui (KMG) is the main hub. Dali Fengyi (DLU) has limited domestic flights only. There are no international flights into Dali, so foreign visitors almost always arrive through Kunming.
Food
Kunming and Dali have some of the most distinctive food in China, influenced by the Bai, Yi, and Hui minorities.
Crossing-bridge noodles (guoqiao mixian) is Yunnan’s signature dish: a bowl of chicken broth so hot it cooks raw meat, vegetables, and rice noodles at your table. The two classic Kunming institutions are Jianxinyuan (a century-old state-owned brand, ¥31-68 per bowl) and Qiaoxiangyuan (a more affordable chain, ¥24-56). Watch out for restaurants near tourist sites claiming to be “century-old shops” with aggressive touts.

Other Yunnan specialties: erkuai (rice cakes, often stir-fried), steam-pot chicken (qiguoji), rushan (Bai cheese, stretched and fried), and flower cakes (xianhuabing, pastries stuffed with rose petals, best from the Jiahua brand).
In Dali, try Bai three-course tea (sandaocha): a bitter tea, a sweet tea, and an aftertaste tea, served with a cultural performance at some restaurants and guesthouses.
Best Time to Visit
Kunming’s spring-like climate makes it visitable year-round. November to March is best for the Siberian gulls at Dianchi and Green Lake.
Dali’s high season is March to April (cherry blossoms and mild weather) and September to November (autumn colors and clear skies over Erhai). Avoid the June to September rainy season if you can, when heavy downpours can last for days.
Both destinations get extremely crowded during the October 1-7 National Day holiday and Spring Festival. Book hotels and train tickets well in advance.
