Suzhou is China’s “City of Gardens,” home to nine UNESCO World Heritage classical gardens, a thousand-year silk tradition, and a web of canal-side old streets that feel frozen in the Ming dynasty.
It is also the single most popular day trip from Shanghai, which means two things for you: the logistics are dead simple, and you must book the top sights ahead. Here is how to do Suzhou right in one day (or two), with 2026 prices, reservation rules, and the pitfalls that trip up most foreign visitors.
One day or two?
- One day works, but it is tight: early train → Humble Administrator’s Garden (or Lingering Garden) → Suzhou Museum → lunch on Pingjiang Road → a second garden + Shantang Street → evening train back. It hinges entirely on securing those reservations.
- Two days is better if you can swing it: Day 1 for gardens + old streets + museum; Day 2 for Tiger Hill + Hanshan Temple + a water town (Tongli). This is the version that does not feel rushed.
- The catch: in peak season the Humble Administrator’s Garden and Suzhou Museum reservations sell out days ahead. If you cannot lock those, either shift your dates or read the fallback tip below.
Getting there: Shanghai to Suzhou
A high-speed G-train covers Shanghai to Suzhou in about 25-30 minutes, with departures every 10-15 minutes throughout the day. Second-class fares start around 40 yuan (check 12306 or Trip.com for live times and exact prices — they vary slightly by train). The one mistake to avoid: Suzhou has three high-speed stations. Alight at Suzhou Station (苏州站) — the downtown station, closest to the gardens and old town. Suzhou North (苏州北) sits on the Beijing-Shanghai line, far north of the city, and means a long metro ride to anything you came to see. When you book, confirm the destination reads “Suzhou,” not “Suzhou North.”

The fallback tip (read this before you go)
If the Humble Administrator’s Garden is booked out — and in peak season it often is — go to the Lingering Garden instead. It is also UNESCO-listed, genuinely stunning, and usually half as crowded. Plenty of travelers end up preferring it.

A perfect one-day plan
- 8:00-8:30 train: Shanghai to Suzhou Station (~25-30 min). Buy a day or two ahead on 12306.
- Morning: Humble Administrator’s Garden right at opening (or the 6:45 lotus slot), then walk to the Suzhou Museum if you scored a reservation.
- Lunch: Pingjiang Road — Su-style noodles (try fengzhen pork noodle), pan-fried pork buns, osmanthus cake.
- Afternoon: Lingering Garden (or Lion Grove), then wander Shantang Street along the canal.
- Evening: trains back to Shanghai run every few minutes between 18:00 and 20:00.
Tongli - a quiet canal town about 30 minutes from Suzhou, and the ideal Day 2.
If you stay a second day: a water town
Add Tongli (~30 min from Suzhou) — a quiet canal town with the UNESCO-listed Tuisi Garden and a fraction of Zhouzhuang’s crowds. Zhouzhuang (~1 hour away) is the most-photographed “No. 1 water town in China” — more commercial, more spectacular. Either makes an ideal Day 2.
When to go
Spring (April-May, wisteria and peonies) and autumn (September-October, osmanthus and crisp air) are ideal.
