Hangzhou Day Trip from Shanghai: The Perfect 1- or 2-Day Itinerary (2026)
Forty-five minutes by bullet train from Shanghai lands you on the willow-lined shores of West Lake - the landscape Marco Polo called the most beautiful and splendid city in the world. Hangzhou was China’s imperial pleasure garden for a thousand years, and its West Lake is a UNESCO World Heritage site, the blueprint for nearly every classical Chinese garden and ink painting you have ever seen.
Like Suzhou, Hangzhou is the ultimate day trip from Shanghai - and like Suzhou, it has one big 2026 catch you need to know about: Lingyin Temple and the whole Feilai Peak scenic area went free in December 2025, but you now must reserve online in advance. Walk-up entry was abolished in February 2026. Here is the full picture, with 2026 prices, reservation rules, and the quiet corners most visitors miss.
One day or two?
- One day works, but it is tight: early train -> Lingyin Temple (reserved) -> West Lake boat and the Su Causeway -> dinner on Hefang Street -> evening train back.
- Two days is better: Day 1 for Lingyin + the West Lake core; Day 2 for a Longjing tea village (or Xixi Wetland) plus the peaceful Maojiabu shore.
- The catch: Lingyin and Feilai Peak reservations sell out in peak season. Lock them early.
Getting there: Shanghai to Hangzhou
A G-train covers Shanghai Hongqiao to Hangzhou East (杭州东) in about 45-60 minutes, with departures every few minutes. Second-class fares run 70-100 yuan (check 12306 for live times and exact prices). Book with your passport - full walk-through in our high-speed rail guide.
The station question: nearly all Shanghai-Hangzhou bullet trains arrive at Hangzhou East, the city’s main hub. (Hangzhou’s older “Chengzhan” main station is marginally closer to West Lake but gets only a couple of HSR trains a day - do not count on it.) From Hangzhou East, take Metro Line 1 to Longxiangqiao, then walk about 5 minutes to the West Lake shore at Hubin.

The 2026 change everyone misses: Lingyin is now free - but you must reserve
From December 1, 2025, the entire Lingyin-Feilai Peak scenic area (Lingyin Temple, Yongfu Temple, and Taoguan Temple) scrapped its 75-yuan combined ticket and became free. Then from February 1, 2026, the park went further: on-site registration was cancelled - you can no longer walk up and get in. You must reserve a timed slot in advance via the “Hangzhou Lingyin Feilai Peak” (杭州灵隐飞来峰) mini-program on Alipay or WeChat, then enter with your passport or ID.
In practice: free is wonderful, but if you show up without a reservation you are turned away. Reserve the night before at minimum. Opening hours 7:30-17:30 (last entry 17:00).

A perfect one-day plan
- 8:00 train: Shanghai Hongqiao to Hangzhou East (~45-60 min). Buy a day or two ahead on 12306.
- Morning: Metro toward the Lingyin area -> Lingyin Temple and Feilai Peak (with your reservation).
- Lunch: Back by the lake - Hangzhou cuisine (West Lake fish in vinegar, Longjing shrimp).
- Afternoon: West Lake boat out to the Three Pools island -> walk the Su Causeway -> Leifeng Pagoda for sunset.
- Evening: Hefang Street for snacks, then frequent trains back to Shanghai (19:00-21:00).
The quiet West Lake
The headline stretches - Broken Bridge, the Bai Causeway - are mobbed on any pleasant day. Walk 15 minutes west to Yanggong Causeway or the Maojiabu / Yuhu Bay area: same West Lake UNESCO zone, a fraction of the crowds, tea farms and silent groves. Locals know this; tour groups do not.

When to go
Spring (April-May, the Longjing pre-Qingming tea harvest plus peach blossoms) and autumn (September-October, when the whole city smells of osmanthus). Avoid the domestic surges - National Day Golden Week (Oct 1-7), the summer holiday heat, and the May Day weekend. See our season-by-region guide.

- Lingyin reservation needs your passport: the Alipay/WeChat mini-program accepts foreign passport numbers - enter your number and name exactly as printed.

What to eat
Hangzhou cuisine (Hangbang cai) is mild and refined: West Lake fish in vinegar (西湖醋鱼), Longjing shrimp (龙井虾仁), Dongpo pork, and beggar’s chicken. Try pian’er chuan, a Hangzhou noodle soup with pickled greens and pork. And drink the dragon-well green tea at its source in Longjing village.
